BOREAS Walking Tours in northern
Greece

    About us

    Evangelos Karagiannis

Evangelos was born in the Byzantine mountain city of Veria, in Northern Greece. Since his early childhood, he loved skiing, hiking, travelling, visiting museums and archaeological sites. He studied Italian literature and language and history of art in Florence, Italy. During his university years he started guiding school groups from all around Europe on visits to Florence. After graduating, he worked for various Greek and foreign travel agencies and he travelled all around the globe. He also started sailing.

Building on the experience he gathered along the way, he decided to create BOREAS Art & Nature Travel Services, an agency which would address people who, like himself, want to “live”, to experience, the places they visit, to appreciate their cultural and natural beauties, and who demand excellent travel services!

    Sotiris Karkanias

Sotiris Karkanias was born in Athens in 1985. He studied classical history and archaeology in the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens and then tour-guiding in the University of Thessaloniki. He also got involved with cinema and worked for the Cultural Centre of the Greek Union of Cinema and Television Technicians (ETEKT).

For many years he has been responsible for the show programme of ETEKT, presenting films; he was also the chief person responsible for the film library and the book library of the Centre. He has been employed as a translator from French to Greek. Sotiris plays the guitar and the piano professionally, both live and doing album recordings. He loves exploring places, both by walking and by reading about them. Other than that, his main pastimes are listening to music and watching films.

Sotiris collaborates with BOREAS as an historian-archaeologist and as a French-speaking tour guide.

    Anastasia Gkouni

Anastasia was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, where she also studied History and Archaeology. As a student she spent her summers participating in excavations at various ancient sites, among them Pella, the ancient capital of Macedonia. After graduation she also worked as an archaeologist for the local Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. A native Greek speaker, Anastasia also speaks English and German fluently. She is currently finishing her Master’s degree in Classical Archaeology at the University of Birmingham, UK. Her major research interest is the study of material culture, mainly the vase painting and pottery production of the ancient Greek world. She enjoys sharing its history with other people.

Among other things, she loves travelling and exploring not only monuments of the past but new or unusual places as well, listening to the tales they have to narrate. Quite recently she discovered some new passions, immersing herself in aspects of folklore culture such as the knitting, crocheting and lace-making techniques of the Mediterranean.

Anastasia collaborates with BOREAS as a tour guide in German and English.
