Corinth Canal Private Tour from Athens and Ancient Corinth
5 HOURS 160€
The Corinth Canal is located 85 kilometres west of Athens. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the mainland of Greece. The canal is approximately 6 km long and is an important tourist attraction. It is easy to reach from Athens and is located on the way to the archaeological sites of Mycenae and Epidaurus.
During our half-day sightseeing tour we will make a stop at the Isthmus of Corinth which will give you the opportunity to take plenty of photos. You may consider yourself lucky if we see a ship passing through. The word “Isthmus” derives from an ancient Greek word which means “neck” referring to the narrowness of the canal.
Up next we will visit the Ancient Corinth which held significant importance during the Greek, Hellenistic and Roman times. Due to its geographical location, it was an important trade centre and was called the “Wealthy Corinth.
The archaeological site of Corinth was once a cult to Aphrodite, Apollo, Demeter, Hera, Poseidon and Helios. During the Roman ruling Aphrodite, Poseidon, and Demeter did continue to be worshipped along with the Roman gods. Today the site is dominated by the Temple of Apollo which is considered to be one of the best examples of early Doric temple building, the Temple of Aesculapius, the Amphitheatre, the Conservatory and the Peirene Fountain which originally dates to 6th century BC, among other remains from the ancient world. The Archaeological finds at the site include fine mosaics, Greek and Roman sculptures as well as an outstanding number of Greek pottery.
After your memorable experience of discovering Ancient Corinth and its hidden gems, we will return to the starting point of our tour.
